About
Founded in 1946, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is one of the world’s most respected international humanitarian organizations. With more than 6,000 dedicated employees around the world, we work to help people forced to flee. We provide food assistance, clean water, shelter, legal aid and education to six million refugees and internally displaced people. With projects across 32 countries, we meet urgent needs and help create a future for people forced from their homes.
What we do
We deliver high-quality humanitarian assistance where needs are greatest. Through our programmes we provide assistance to prevent further displacement and contribute to durable solutions. We focus on protecting people forced to flee from conflict and supporting them as they build a new future. NRC is a determined advocate for displaced people. When we witness injustice, we alert the world. We promote and defend displaced people’s rights and dignity in local communities, with national governments and in the international arena. NRC’s Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre in Geneva is a global leader in monitoring, reporting on and advocating for people displaced within their own country. We respond quickly to emergencies. Our expert deployment capacity NORCAP, the world’s most used, boasts around 1,000 experts from all over the world. Our experts stand ready to deploy at a moment’s notice to support the UN and local authorities in humanitarian crises.
NRC USA
NRC USA was established in February 2016 in Washington, D.C. The NRC USA office has two primary functions: (1) raising money for NRC’s overseas programs to respond to the needs of conflictaffected refugees and internally displaced people; and (2) providing humanitarian policy advice to the administration, Congress, and other non-governmental organizations. NRC receives financial support from USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance and the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. NRC USA assists the field programs in applying for critical support. Our policy and advocacy work translates the direct experiences of NRC field staff and programs into practical recommendations for how the U.S. government and Congress can better meet the needs of the world’s refugees. The issues we work on include the comprehensive refugee response framework, protection of civilians in armed conflict, respect for International Humanitarian Law, better global response to internal displacement, and better humanitarian response by the U.S. in our priority countries. Our priority countries include:

NRC USA is a resource to universities, think tanks, and the general public on refugee issues, and seeks financial support and partnerships with U.S.-based individuals, foundations and corporations.
